Trafficking in Persons Report: TIP Report 2022

On July 20, 2022, the US Department of State Thailand has published its Trafficking in Persons Report 2022 (2022 TIP Report), which compiles data on trafficking in persons from 188 countries and territories in the past year. Tier 2, up from last year’s Tier 2 Watchlist.

The report stated that The Thai government has shown more efforts than the previous year. Despite the epidemic situation of COVID-19 that affect the ability to suppress human trafficking Increase human trafficking investigations Amending relevant laws and punishing offenders Establish a new human trafficking victim assistance center and identifying more victims of human trafficking.

However, Thailand still does not meet the minimum standards set by the US government. set in many aspects, for example, the number of people who are prosecuted and punished in human trafficking cases has decreased Authorities also lack the knowledge to identify victims of human trafficking. For example, Thailand has been upgraded to Tier 2. The United States has divided the situation of human trafficking into 4 levels :

  • Tier 1 is a country that fully complies with minimum legal standards for the prevention and protection of victims of trafficking.
  • Tier 2 is the country in which it operates. Efforts to tackle human trafficking have been demonstrated.
  • The Tier 2 Watch list is the country where human trafficking victims are reported to be increasing. or there is no evidence that the government has tried to combat human trafficking
  • Tier 3 is a country that does not comply with US minimum standards and is not trying to tackle human trafficking.

This year, the United States ranks Tier 3 with countries that ignore forced non-consensual sex acts. and neglect to illegally trade migrant workers, including Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei and Macau.
